Bias in Ecological Regression
نویسنده
چکیده
Bias formulae are derived for ecological regression estimators. These formulae are useful for determining the direction and magnitude of bias in estimation. It is shown that when group cohesion is higher in areas with higher concentrations of group members and when polarization is higher in more homogeneous areas, ecological regression estimates of polarization will tend to be biased upward. Both minority and majority cohesion rates will be overestimated, but the magnitude of the bias will be greater for the estimate of minority cohesion. Ecological regression estimators are also compared to alternative neighborhood estimation techniques.

Spatial Regression in the Presence of Misaligned data
In this paper, four approaches are presented to the problem of fitting a linear regression model in the presence of spatially misaligned data. These approaches are plug-in method, simulation, regression calibration and maximum likelihood. In the first two approaches, with modeling the correlation between the explanatory variable, prediction of explanatory variable is determined at sites...
متن کاملSample selection bias and presence-only distribution models: implications for background and pseudo-absence data.
Most methods for modeling species distributions from occurrence records require additional data representing the range of environmental conditions in the modeled region. These data, called background or pseudo-absence data, are usually drawn at random from the entire region, whereas occurrence collection is often spatially biased toward easily accessed areas. Since the spatial bias generally re...
متن کاملUsing Inverse Probability Bootstrap Sampling to Eliminate Sample Induced Bias in Model Based Analysis of Unequal Probability Samples
In ecology, as in other research fields, efficient sampling for population estimation often drives sample designs toward unequal probability sampling, such as in stratified sampling. Design based statistical analysis tools are appropriate for seamless integration of sample design into the statistical analysis. However, it is also common and necessary, after a sampling design has been implemente...
متن کاملConfronting Multicollinearity in Ecological Multiple Regression
The natural complexity of ecological communities regularly lures ecologists to collect elaborate data sets in which confounding factors are often present. Although multiple regression is commonly used in such cases to test the individual effects of many explanatory variables on a continuous response, the inherent collinearity (multicollinearity) of confounded explanatory variables encumbers ana...
متن کاملUnravelling ecological analysis
Ecological analysis involves analysing aggregate data for groups of individuals to make inferences about relationships at the individual level. Often the results of such analyses give badly biased estimates. This paper will consider the sources of bias in linear regression analysis using aggregate data. The role of variation of the individual level relationships between groups and the consequen...
